Aalto University is where science and art meet technology and business. We shape a sustainable future by making research breakthroughs in and across our disciplines, sparking the game changers of tomorrow and creating novel solutions to major global challenges. Our community is made up of 13 000 students, 400 professors and close to 4 500 other faculty and staff working on our dynamic campus in Espoo, Greater Helsinki, Finland. Diversity is part of who we are, and we actively work to ensure our community’s diversity and inclusiveness. This is why we warmly encourage qualified candidates from all backgrounds to join our community.
The School of Electrical Engineering is one of the six schools of Aalto University. Our portfolio covers fields from natural sciences to engineering and information sciences. In parallel with basic research, we develop ideas and technologies further into innovations and services. We are experts in systems science; we develop integrated solutions from care of the elderly to space robotics. The School is an international unit with close to 60 professors and 2 000 full-time students, including over 200 doctoral students.
The Designer Materials and Devices Group
at the Department of Electronics and Nanoengineering is inviting applications for a
Doctoral Researcher (PhD) in the area of Nanophotonics / Electromagnetics
Scientific context
The range and strength of photonic properties of natural materials are often limited and cannot satisfy rapidly growing needs of the modern industry. This circumstance has led to the emergence of an important category of designer materials which embraces composites, colloids, photonic crystals, metasurfaces, and others. The key aim of this field is to develop new materials with desired properties and to explore and invent principally novel functionalities. Designer materials have been suggested to host a variety of unique phenomena, such as photonic band gaps, electromagnetic cloaking, and negative refraction.
Your role and goals
Our group focuses on theoretical, computational, and experimental research on metamaterials and metasurfaces with their specific applications for advanced nanophotonics. The doctoral student will join our new
Academy Project
but will be involved in other projects as well. The research will have strong theoretical, simulation, and possible experimental investigations.
The expected starting date for the position is negotiable but not later than January 1, 2024 and it is intended for full-time work. The selected person will work under supervision of
Assistant Professor Viktar Asadchy
. The successful applicant will have a possibility to cooperate with world-class researchers at the Department, publish in high-profile journals, contribute to teaching of students, attend scientific conferences, and go on research visits to the external collaborators. Moreover, the research group provides strong support and academic freedom, with possibilities for interdisciplinary collaboration, both internationally and within Aalto University.
Your experience and ambitions
As a successful candidate for this position, you should have:
  • An undergraduate degree and a master’s degree (or equivalent) with major in optics, physics, electromagnetics, or electrical engineering.
  • Strong background in electrodynamics and excellent mathematical skills.
  • High proficiency in Matlab, Mathematica, or similar programming software.
  • High motivation and creativity.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including presentation skills.
  • Highly proficient English language skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to details and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to learn and work collaboratively in a research environment.
  • A strong commitment to her/his own continuous professional development.
Skills, knowledge, and abilities in the following areas are not required but highly desirable:
  • Proficiency in electromagnetic simulation software, such as COMSOL Multiphysics, ANSYS HFSS, or CST Studio Suite.
  • Solid background in one or few of the following subjects: quantum field theory, magneto-optics, photonic topological insulators.
  • Previous experience with the topic of time-varying materials.
  • Possible experience in nanofabrication is a plus.
The applicant is expected to:
  • Publish in top journals and participate in scientific conferences
  • Participate in research proposal preparation
  • Guide master's students
  • Taking advanced postgraduate courses
  • Participate as a teaching assistant for courses at Aalto
