About the role

We are looking for an Automation Engineer to join our Technology Development team and strengthen the capabilities in developing and rolling out solutions for the control of our hydropower plants.

You will be a part of a team which is developing the Fortum hydropower portfolio to create value in the long term and develop future system and market needs.

In your role, you will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Develop innovative solutions for the control system of the hydropower plants in Fortum’s portfolio to fulfil legal and market requirements.
  • Design, test and implement technical solutions to improve performance of the automation systems.
  • Perform simulations, deriving parameters for tuning and performance verification.
  • Contribute to the development of automation standards at Fortum plants.
  • Support large investment projects to set requirements for suppliers and maintenance contractors to ensure the quality of deliveries.

About you

To succeed in this role, we expect you to have previous experience, especially practical, of industrial automation and an interest in the energy sector.

Requirements for the role are:

  • Master or bachelor's degree in Control, Electrical, Mechanical engineering or similar.
  • Understanding of control systems and theory.
  • Knowledge in simulation environment e.g., Matlab/Simulink. PLC programming, for example Siemens S7, TIA portal or ABB 800xA is an advantage.
  • Innovative mindset and structured way of working.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • B-drivers licence.

Nice to have that will make you stand out:

  • On site-experience in an industrial environment.
  • Fluency in written and spoken Swedish.

Personal qualifications:

You are a proactive person and willing to move things forward. You are independent with own tasks but enjoy working with others and like to contribute with your competence and skills.


The position will be based in one of our offices in Stockholm, Borlänge, Karlstad, Arbrå, Sveg or Östersund. The job implies travelling in Sweden and occasionally abroad.
