The School of International Studies is now seeking exceptional scholars to join us as Associate Professor in European and International History in the fields of International Studies.

About the School

A marriage of the University of Nottingham United Kingdom’s School of History and School of Politics and International Relations, we have a decidedly British approach to international relations, paired with strengths in international and transnational history. With 15 academic staff members from thirteen different countries, IS is the most international School at UNNC and possibly all of China.

About You

The School of International Studies is looking for a talented scholar to integrate our existing strengths in the field of History. This is a re-advertised open position available to fill immediately and those who have recently applied need not apply again. Candidates at Assistant Professor level with credentials to be appointed at a higher level are also encouraged to apply.

Candidates should have a completed PhD in History with teaching and research interests in European and International History while demonstrating ability to contribute to the broader interdisciplinarity of international studies. Scholars whose specialisms fall under different chronologies and periods, from antiquity to contemporary history, are encouraged to apply. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research and teaching speak to intellectual and political history as well as Europe in world and global history.

Applicants must evidence ability to teach core courses in European History and can go beyond their specialism contributing to the broader teaching in International Studies. Candidates should also be well-positioned to contribute to and/or to convene specialist courses such as ‘The Silk Road: Cultural Interactions and Perceptions’, ‘The History of Political Thought’ and ‘Roads to Modernity, Europe 1600-1939’. The role holder will take responsibility for maintaining high teaching standards and contribute generally to the development of teaching, teaching methods and assessments in International Studies.

An established or growing international research profile in European and International History will be considered essential. Also required is a clear research strategy that has the potential to result in grant capture and world-leading publications. Candidates will be expected to act as principal investigator on major research projects in their field of expertise and identify opportunities for the development of new research projects. An active contribution to the research cluster ‘Global, Imperial and Transnational Histories’ will also be expected.

The role holder will participate in the School of International Studies’ organisation, management and strategic planning and will also be expected to contribute to the University’s strategic planning processes. This position will also be expected to carry out administrative duties and represent the School within the University depending on needs and as directed by the Head of School.
